If you and a colleague both wanted the same thing would you let the colleague get it first?

So I've been working with this guy for a while now.
He's really great, an amazing person (please don't downvote me for this Craig)
but me and him both need to talk to the same teacher about different matters.
Sadly the teacher only has room for 1 conversation, and we can't share it.
What should I do? Let him have his chance or should I try to use it for myself?
